Children's Clothing Boutique, Battersea

Brief
To design an interior solution for a new childrens clothing store, 'Powerhouse G', in Battersea. The target customers are mothers and children aged 6-12, boys and girls.

Design considerations
Create a space that will:
a) feel open, light and spacious
b) Display clothes to their best effect
c) Have a fun and play value for children
d) Have a sense of 'cool'
e) Offer mums a pleasant shopping environment

The Solution
The children's boutique was inspired by the industrial surroundings, lying as it does in the shadow of the ruined Battersea Power Station. The design theme was one of inner city heavy metal, with scaffold pole dress racks, concrete floors, industrial lighting and metal treads on the stairs between the sales areas. The concept was coined 'innocent graffitti' - urban cool, but through a childs eyes.

Predominantly white walls allow the clothing to create the colour, with contrast provided by areas of digitally printed wallpaper emblazoned with graffiti. The many mirrors provide both an illusion of space and allow the young customers 'strutting places', to try out the merchandise.

There is a strong fun element running through the shop with a large arcade game, a blackboard area for graffiti created by the kids, and plenty of foam bricks as merchandising details.

A coffee machine for frazzled mums and a children's hairdresser, are additional conveniences. Other thoughtful features are fitting rooms, at the far end of the shop, leading the customers past all the displays, and most of the stock is stored in units on the shop floor, avoiding the security problem of sales staff leaving the shop-floor.
